I was honoured to be elected the Member for Altona District at a by-election in 2010, and to be re-elected in 2010 and 2014. Altona is a fantastic part of Melbourne and I’m very proud to represent the people of Melbourne’s West.
Since the election of the Andrews Labor Government in 2014 I have served as the Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services, portfolios I am particularly passionate about. I know how vital it is that Victorians are able to access good healthcare if and when they need it, and I am working hard to improve services and support staff. I have also previously held shadow ministerial roles for Public Transport, Anti-Corruption, Corrections, Crime Prevention and Women.
Before I entered Parliament I had a number of occupations, including as a lawyer, community volunteer, legal adviser, Western Health and Western Region Health board member, Chair of the Victorian Working Families Council, adviser to then Premier Steve Bracks, and home-based mum. I enjoyed a wide variety of experiences that have been very valuable to me in my work as an MP. I have a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts from Monash Uni, and a Masters of Public and International Law from Melbourne Uni. My mum was particularly passionate about my brothers and I getting a good education, and she instilled in me my belief in ensuring educational opportunities for all.
My parents, my work and my life experiences have made me firm in the belief that equality of opportunity is the basis for a fair and successful society. Equal access to good healthcare, a decent education and fulfilling employment are vital ingredients in an equitable civilization, and I know Government has a big part to play in ensuring these are available.
As a long term resident of the west, I am proud to live here and to raise my family here. Melbourne’s West is one of Melbourne’s most interesting, dynamic and diverse communities, as well as its fastest growing. I understand the things that matter for working families locally, and I’m determined to stand up to protect and grow local jobs, build a strong health system, deliver quality education for all, and address the transport challenges facing communities right across the west.
On a more personal note, I’m an avid music fan (particularly the Rolling Stones), and I love trying out new recipes at home. My dreams came true in 2016 with the Western Bulldogs grand final win.
