Point Cook Library expansion to create more space for kids
Children and young people will be the big winners from an expansion of the Point Cook Library, announced today by the Member for Altona District Jill Hennessy.
The Andrews Labor Government is investing $750,000 from the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program to help the expand the library, with a larger children’s area and more space for youth programs.
The major upgrade will expand the library by 230 square metres, delivering more silent study rooms and group study spaces.
This will mean that the growing suburb and the library’s increased active members will have more space to undertake activities that encourage learning and entertainment in a shared environment.
The $1.2 million project also includes a $450,000 contribution from the Wyndham City Council.
We know that libraries are vital to local communities and expanded libraries attract more people.
According to the Know Your Council website, there has been a 50 per cent increase in library users in Wyndham after the recent opening of the Julia Gillard Library in Tarneit – a project that also received a $750,000 contribution from the state government.
The Living Libraries Infrastructure Program is one of a number of Labor Government initiatives designed to support libraries and associated learning opportunities – others include the $41.5 million investment in the Public Libraries Funding Program and $4.4 million (over four years) for the Premiers’ Reading Challenge Book Fund
